Early 20th century village life in Compton Chamberlayne is no better described than by the memoirs of a village resident Mrs Hilda Alice Kerley who was born c. 1900 and had lived in the village since 1906. She died in 1979 and is buried in the village along with her husband. Her ‘essay on village life’ was passed by her son to a member of the Langdon family and it is with their permission that we gratefully publish the following:
